Chasing Greatness: Liz Wishart's Journey in CrossFit

In the world of competitive sports, few things are as exhilarating as the rush of competition. Liz Wishart, a determined athlete, shares her passion for CrossFit, her coaching journey, and her aspirations for the future. Let’s dive into her experiences, motivations, and the community that fuels her drive.

The Thrill of Competition

When it comes to competition, Liz's enthusiasm is palpable. She reveals that what truly drives her is the sheer joy of stepping onto the competition floor. The adrenaline rush before a competition is something she cherishes. “I absolutely love going out on the floor and just really competing,” she says. For Liz, the process of training is exciting, but it’s the thrill of competing that ignites her passion.

Setting goals and dedicating time to achieve them brings Liz immense satisfaction. “I love having a goal and spending so much time working on a goal and then for it to like really come to fruition,” she explains. This feeling of accomplishment isn't just limited to her own achievements. Watching others succeed, especially in extreme athletic events, can move her to tears. “Watching my mom run a half marathon for the first time totally made me tear up,” she admits, showcasing her empathetic nature and love for the sport.

Coaching and Community

While many athletes choose to focus solely on their competitive journey, Liz has found fulfillment in coaching as well. Initially, coaching was simply an extension of her passion for the sport. “I loved it,” she recalls. Over time, as her training intensified, she understood why some athletes prefer to focus solely on competition. However, she never wanted to completely let go of coaching.

“I love watching people reach their goals,” she states. Being a small part of their journey is rewarding for her. Sharing the knowledge and skills she has gained along the way is important to Liz. “I know so many people have helped me get to the point where I am,” she reflects, emphasizing the importance of community and support in athletics.

A Day in the Life

Liz’s life isn’t just about CrossFit; she also works as a firefighter. This unique job allows her to experience something different every day while still maintaining a training schedule that complements her athletic goals. “I love it,” she says of her firefighting career. “The schedule is really cool for CrossFit, and I get to enjoy a job that I get to go to work every day and do something completely different.”

This balance between her job and training is crucial. It keeps her mentally engaged and physically prepared for the challenges of both her career and athletic pursuits. Liz started her firefighting journey about five years ago, inspired by a conversation at a CrossFit competition. “I had no idea what I wanted to do,” she recalls, but now she feels grateful to have found a path that suits her passions.

Setting Goals for the Future

Liz has her eyes set on one overarching goal: making it to the CrossFit Games. “I used to be really scared to say it out loud just because it’s such a big goal,” she admits. After nearly a decade in the sport, she feels a strong desire to reach the top level before her time in the sport is over.

Her coach, Zach Holliday, plays an essential role in her training. “I really like our relationship just because he is at the gym really often,” she explains. This constant feedback helps her improve continuously. Liz trains at CrossFit 9° in Indianapolis, a place she has called home since 2017. Interestingly, she originally joined the gym with her mother, who wanted to give CrossFit a try. “Here we are, almost eight years later, and both of us still train there,” she reflects fondly.

Life Outside the Gym

When she’s not training or firefighting, Liz enjoys thrifting and antique shopping. “That’s like my number one favorite thing right now,” she shares. Her love for travel also shines through, as she often embarks on adventures with her boyfriend in a renovated camper van. “A few years ago, I renovated an old van into a camper van, and we take trips in that,” she says, highlighting her knack for creativity and resourcefulness.

Competing in 2025

As Liz looks ahead to the 2025 season, she expresses mixed feelings about the new competition structure. “I don’t love the structure,” she admits, noting the confusion it brings to many competitors. However, she also recognizes the flexibility it offers. “You can do whatever you want with your season,” she says, appreciating the variety of paths to success.

Despite her reservations, Liz feels prepared and optimistic as she enters the new season. “I just feel more mature overall,” she states, emphasizing her growth as an athlete. “Some of the challenges I’ve faced have helped me even more get into the season.”

Upcoming Competitions

For the upcoming season, Liz has specific events in mind. “I won the NorCal classic last year and I’m going back again this year,” she shares excitedly. This competition, held in Sacramento in June, is one she looks forward to. Additionally, she plans to participate in the Syndicate Crown, aiming to qualify for that event as well. “I’m really excited for how that turns out,” she says, indicating her determination to excel.

Reflections on Team Competition

Although Liz has primarily focused on individual competitions, her experience with team events has left a positive impression. Competing in both individual and team categories at Wodapalooza was a new experience for her. “It really changed my mind as far as team goes,” she reflects. The camaraderie and shared goals among teammates made for a memorable experience.
